The New Plays Are Coming!

Abi Schumann, Amy Lyles, and Ed Whitacre read the play

This weekend, our lit team conducted a virtual living room read of Olivia Briggs‘s new play, AGNES’ BABY, which received last year’s Jane Chambers Student Playwriting Award.

What a cool experience.  Using web streaming and Skype, Olivia, Steven, Tori, and some friends watched from Singapore as actors read the play in Williamsburg with the lit team.  Afterward, we participated in a discussion, which helped us all learn a bit more about the play and bring it closer to production readiness.  We love the possibilities that this technology presents for collaborating locally with artists living around the world.

In the play, Agnes Park, a fifty-year-old republican Congresswoman, has finally given into her lesbian fantasies and hired a South Korean prostitute. What she soon discovers, however, is that her true desires are far from merely sexual, and she must decide between the career she has spent her life building, and the woman she wants to be.

Olivia received her B.A. with honors in Theater from Oberlin College and went on to work on several independent films in Los Angeles, including ‘The Workshop’, a feature documentary released last year that she produced and co-directed. Olivia’s writing for both screen and stage has been recognized by numerous festivals and awarded by The Flint Festival for best screenplay in 2008, and the Association for Theater in Higher Education with The Jane Chambers Student Playwriting Award in 2012. She will graduate from NYU Tisch with a master’s in Dramatic Writing in May of 2013.

Sound like fun?

Join us Saturday, March 16 for a live and on-line developmental reading of Elford Alley‘s new play IN SEARCH OF THE AMHERST COUNTY WILDMAN.

The play chronicles the final adventure of one man’s 40-year attempt to find Big Foot.  Before the land where he grew up is flooded for a reservoir, Carl Earp (no relation to Wyatt) engages the host of a reality TV monster-hunter show to document his last effort to prove to the world that “something” exists out there .  On his quest, Carl confronts personal secrets that expose more than the existence of a legendary creature.

The reading will be followed by a discussion with the playwright, director, and cast.

Saturday, March 16 @ 6:00pm
